If you're ready to take your door hanger DIY to the next level, this step is where the magic really begins—transferring your design to wood! Whether you’re making a door hanger for your own front porch or prepping for a paint party, learning how to trace your template onto wood is a must-have skill.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you do it with confidence:
What You’ll Need:
  • Printed door hanger template (taped together if it’s a multi-page design)
  • Piece of wood (usually 1/4” plywood (sub flooring) or MDF)
  • Painter’s tape or masking tape (optional)
  • Pencil (a dull tip works best)
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Secure the Template on the Wood
Lay your wood on a flat surface. Position your cut-out template on top of the wood where you want the design. Optional: Tape it in place so it doesn’t shift.

Step 2: Trace the Design
Use a pencil to trace along every edge of the template. If your design includes inner details (like letters or shapes), trace those too!
Step 5: Remove and Check
Gently remove the template to reveal your traced design. If any lines are too light, go over them again with your pencil directly on the wood.

You’re Ready to Cut and Paint! Now that your design is transferred, you can cut it out using a jigsaw or scroll saw. Then it’s time to sand the edges and get ready for the fun part—painting!
